LCCU donates 35 holiday gift baskets

Lacamas Community Credit Union donated 35 festive holiday dinner baskets to its members as part of its Community Partnership program. For the fifth consecutive year, the credit union's program allows members to nominate fellow members -- or themselves -- to receive a holiday basket with groceries and a gift card for a holiday dinner. Lacamas President/CEO Kathleen Romane created the dinner basket program in response to the recession in 2008. "This program continues to grow with this year being our most successful drive for nominations," she said. "This is just one of the many ways Lacamas gives back to the local community. These economic times have created a greater need. I hope those of us that are able will reach out to those in need this holiday season."

BIA joins the Community Partnership Initiative to help seniors

The Building Industry Association's Remodeler's Council has partnered with CDM Long-Term Care Services' "Community Partnership Initiative to provide assistance to Clark County seniors. This month members of the Remodeler's Council pooled its resources, including materials and donated labor, to replace a back porch and steps for a senior citizen receiving in-home care services from CDM. The old porch had become a safety hazard and could no longer be used.

Squeeze & Grind owners purchase building

A Washougal couple who purchased Squeeze & Grind 1 1/2 years ago recently bought the building that their business is in. Jeramy and Marcie Wilcox bought 537 N.E. Cedar St., in November, from Albina Bank, of Portland. The purchase price was $220,000. The bank had foreclosed on the property.

Donations for Children’s Center are accepted locally

A business in downtown Camas is among the companies accepting gift items, such as board games, art materials and soccer balls, for the Children’s Center. New and unwrapped toys, stuffed animals, hats, mittens, gift cards and movie passes can be dropped off with Minda Coombs, a sales associate for the A.L. Insurance Group, Inc., 418 N.E. Fourth Ave.

On Thursday, the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Holiday Gift Basket Luncheon. Attendees will have the opportunity to buy gift basket raffle tickets for $1 apiece.

The co-owner of Washougal Sport & Spine Physical Therapy has become a national certified sports specialist. Kimberly Williams, of Camas, recently passed the American Board of Physical Therapy Sports Specialty Examination.

Tsunami Survival Pods are manufactured in Camas

A Camas company is receiving national TV exposure this week. Randy Harper, inventor of tsunami and tornado survival pods, is in New York City to promote the emergency shelters on the Today Show. A segment on the pods was scheduled to air this morning.Harper and Neil Jackson, global account and sales manager of Rescue-Pod, received a call Nov. 20 from someone involved in the production of Today. A Tsunami Survival Pod was shipped the following morning to the set of the show.

Downtown Camas business owners and local officials gathered Wednesday night at Journey Community Church, to recognize some of the individuals who have made a difference with their time and talents. Attendees included John Dietzman (left), husband of Camas City Councilwoman Linda Dietzman, and Downtown Camas Association Board President Caroline Mercury (right). Mercury received the "Creative Local Marketing" award, for coordinating a sale of paper mill artifacts. The event raised nearly $15,000 for the DCA, with collaboration from Georgia-Pacific, Camas Antiques, the DCA and the community.

Downtown Camas businesses are honored

The owners of Universal Mixed Martial Arts have been recognized for transforming a building in downtown Camas. Mel and Cherri Locke received the "Best Downtown Improvement" interior and exterior honors during the Downtown Camas Association annual awards ceremony Wednesday night, at Journey Community Church. The recognition is the result of the Lockes purchasing and renovating the 4,900 square foot building at 217 N.E. Fourth Ave. Interior improvements included framing bathrooms, installing sheet rock and replacing the ceiling, roof and flooring. New paint was added -- inside and out. CID Bio-Science ready to unveil American Legion remodel project

After five months of construction work, the newly remodeled American Legion building in Camas will be unveiled to the public next week. The building's new owner and occupant, CID Bio-Science, Inc., will host an open house Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "We are excited to share our new space with the residents of Camas and Clark County who have expressed an interest in seeing the inside of the building," said Suzy Truitt, order administrator with CID Bio-Science.

Harvest restaurant to open next to Camas Hotel

An Irish-born chef plans to prepare local, fresh and creative dishes in downtown Camas. Tim McCusker, owner of the Rustic Palate (a catering company), will open Harvest restaurant, next to the Camas Hotel, at 401 N.E. Fourth Ave., within the next two months. "We've always been very fond of main street," he said. "It is picturesque. Everyone has been very warm. "Even when you pass a stranger, someone gives you a smile," McCusker added.
