PAID PRINTED OBITUARIES A. Lyndon Gabriel April 19, 1941 ~ March 7, 2019 A. Lyndon Gabriel was born to A.E. and Ruth N. Gabriel on April 19, 1941, in Vancouver, Washington. He lived most of his life in Oregon and Washington. He earned his Eagle Scout in 1957 and graduated from Crook County High School, Prineville, Oregon, in 1959. Enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, he served as a ground electronics countermeasures technician from 1959 to 1964, first in Misawa, Japan, and then in Trabzon, Turkey. It was during this time that he began courting Carol V. Loron of Camas, Washington, via letter correspondence, finally convincing her to marry him on September 19, 1965. Upon leaving active duty service, Lynn pursued his engineering degree, first at Clark College and then at the University of Portland, graduating in 1969. Lynn worked for the Bonneville Power Administration in a variety of positions over the course of his career, culminating in his service as the Head of the Field Services Test Unit, and retired in 1999 after 32 years of civil service. He earned his Professional Engineer’s License and was a Senior Member of the IEEE. Lynn also continued to serve his country in the US Air National Guard as a communications officer, earning a field commission in 1967 and rising to the rank of Major, retiring in 1984. He and Carol have two sons, Peter L. Gabriel of Buena Vista, Colorado, and Christopher L. Gabriel, of Chesapeake, Virginia. They also consider their foreign exchange student, Eerika Jarvikallio, of Espoo, Finland, and goddaughter, Molly March of Chehalis, Washington, as their unofficially adopted daughters. Throughout his life, Lynn served Jesus Christ with his time and with his hands. He was quick to volunteer to help others in need, and was an accomplished handyman and electrician, in addition to being active in Boy Scouts of America. He crafted beautiful pieces of furniture, decorations, and flag boxes out of wood, and loved making sawdust in his woodshop with his children, family, and friends. In addition to woodworking, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He and Carol were worldwide travelers, living in Kempton Park, South Africa for two years, and made multiple trips to Finland, Spain, Korea, Germany, Italy, and South Africa over the years. A member of the East Vancouver Community Church, Lynn served Jesus Christ on multiple short-term missions trips, including two to Mexico, one to New Mexico, and six to Honduras in support of Projecto Manuelito. Lynn was a cancer survivor and fought the good fight against ALS. He was blessed by many wonderful caregivers during the last few years of his life. He finished the race on March 7, 2019, and now wears a crown of victory, standing in the presence of Christ Jesus the Lord. He went peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his beloved bride of 53 years, Carol; his son, Pete, his daughter-in-law, Marty, and their children, Anna, Jim, and Robbie; his son, Chris, his daughter-in-law, Kim, and their children, Vivian, Truman, Will, and Brennan; his sister, Diana Loop and brother George Gabriel; and many other family members and friends. Lynn was predeceased by his parents and sister, Ella Mae Mayfield. Lynn’s Celebration of Life will be held at East Vancouver Community Church, 12415 SE 7th St., Vancouver, WA 98683 at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 1st, 2019. John Whitehead September 5, 1934 ~ May 19, 2019 John Whitehead passed away peacefully on May 19, 2019, in Camas, Washington, at the age of 84. He was born in Butler, Ohio, on September 5, 1934, to Charles C. and Anna Leola (Judd) Whitehead. John graduated from Miami University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. John is survived by his loving wife, Hatsumi, and his children, Charles Whitehead (Deborah), a law professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and Dr. William Whitehead (Janet) of League City, Texas, who works as a professor at University of Texas, Galveston; grandchildren, John, James, Alexander, Bradley and Jillian Whitehead and his sisters, Sidne Anne Martin and Linda Lucarello. John was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Frederick Whitehead (2011). He served our country in the Army and, while working for the Foreign Service, lived in several overseas countries. He retired as the Chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo Japan. Services were held at Straub’s Funeral Home, 325 NE 3rd Avenue, Camas, WA 98607 on Wednesday, May 22nd. Patricia A. ter Horst Patricia A. ter Horst, of Washougal, died May 21, 2019. She was 92. A private graveside service will be held at Washougal Memorial Cemetery. He was born in Dec. 14, 1969, in Coos Bay, Oregon, to Jerry and Wanda Bush. Vance graduated from Camas High School June 1988. He was employed at Perkins Pacific as warehouse parts coordinator in Ridgefield, Washington. He loved his dogs, Samantha and Buddy, his fur babies. These two dogs were his children and he was a wonderful dad to them. He loved football and he was the No. 1 12th man for the Seattle Seahawks. Each year he enjoyed playing fantasy football with like-minded football fans. He loved to organize gaming boards during the Super Bowl, bringing people together. Vance was the most caring and loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Jerry and Connie Bush; siblings, David (Teri) Bush, Scott (Cobi) Bush and Charlotte Miller. Celebration of life will be held Friday, May 24, at 2 p.m., at the Lacamas Lake Lodge, 227 N.W. Lake Road, Camas.
