Washougal track and field athletes shine at sub-districtsThe Washougal boys track and field team finished second to Ridgefield on the Spudders' home track at a sub-district meet on Saturday, May 11. Washougal sprinter Ryan Davy took first place in the 100-meter and 200 events, finishing the 100 in 11 seconds flat and the 200 in 22.50. Koy Chaston took first in the 400, and the Washougal 4x400 relay team also took top honors.The Washougal girls won sub-districts thanks to impressive wins by Amelia Pullen in the 3,200, Kiara Kallie in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Kiersten De La Rocha in the discus and Grace Dolan in the long jump. Washougal hosts the 2A District 4 meet on Friday, May 17, at Fishback Stadium. Camas boys track and field wins district championship, girls finish secondThe defending 4A state champion Camas boys track and field team claimed the 4A District 4 championship on Thursday, May 9 at McKenzie Stadium in Vancouver, while the Papermakers' girls finished in second place.Camas' Blake Deringer posted a personal record of 10.98 seconds in the 100 meters, placing second to Union's Lincoln Victor running 10.90. Deringer also won the 200. Mason Gross won the 400, two-time state champion Daniel Maton cleaned up in the 800 and 1,600 while Jackson Lyne won the 3,200. The Papermakers also won the 4x400 relay, and Micah Hirimoto jumped 21 feet, 1 inch to win the long jump. For the Camas girls, Emma Coates won the 400, Halle Jenkins won the 3,200 and the 4x400 relay team won first place honors. Sophomore Lucy George, who competed at the state meet in hurdles last year, has not been able to run this spring because of a knee injury. However, she managed to qualify for regionals in two different field events. George finished third in the javelin and won the long jump with a personal record of 16-8.5. Anna Bedont won the pole vault, clearing 10-9, a personal record.Camas tennis players earn bi-district berthRachel Merrill and Jace Moriki have qualified for the 4A bi-district tournament in Kent after finishing in the top three in the 4A District 4 tournament, held at Vancouver Tennis Center on May 11. Moriki advanced to the championship match in singles play, but was defeated by Leilani Gonzales from Skyview 6-2, 6-2. The Papermakers' doubles team of Tionni Trieu and Angela Xu also qualified for bi-districts, working their way through the consolation bracket to finish in third place. Camas softball advances to district tournamentIt wasn't the regular season finish the Camas softball team had hoped for as the Papermakers dropped their final two games of the season to 4A Greater St. Helens League-leading Battle Ground (7-4) on May 8 and Columbia River (8-3) on May 9.The Papermakers (12-6 overall) still have a chance to make a postseason run, however. Camas played Kentridge in a loser-out opening round game of the 4A District 4 tournament in Kent on May 14, after this edition's deadline.Washougal doubles teams advance in postseasonTwo doubles teams from the Washougal High School girls tennis team advanced to the 2A District 4 tournament after winning at a sub-district tournament on May 11-12 at Mint Valley Racquet Club in Longview. Beyonce Bea and Paige Wilson took first place, advancing through the first and second rounds in straight sets before playing teammates Emily Johnson and Elise Moore. Bea and Wilson defeated Johnson and Moore 6-0, 6-1 to move on to the championship match, where they beat Madison Pond and Chandra Lomax from Mark Morris 6-1, 6-3. Johnson and Moore also qualified for the district tournament, which will be held on May 16-17 at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
