School Briefs for April 19, 2018

WSD students to bring Dr. Seuss to life Cape Horn-Skye Elementary and Canyon Creek Middle School will participate in the production of "Seussical Jr. the Musical." The musical will debut at 7 p.m., Friday, April 20, at Washburn Auditorium in Washougal High School, 1201 39th St., Washougal. There also will be two show on Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and the show will conclude with a final performance at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 22. Tickets are available 90 minutes before each show, and cost $3 for children under 12 and $5 for adults. Cape Horn-Skye teacher Josie Hudson and Jemtegaard Middle/Columbia River Gorge Elementary schools' librarian Heather Kastle will share the anchor role of Cat in the Hat. Since February, approximately 50 Cape Horn-Skye and eight Canyon Creek students -- in kindergarten through eighth grade -- have met after school on Wednesdays to rehearse and prepare. Parent volunteer Natalie Dewey said the students have worked really hard. "All who see it will be thrilled at the talent they see and hear," she said. "It is a wonderful show, and audiences will really enjoy it." Contributed information courtesy of Rene Carroll, Washougal School District Student well-being fair at Hathaway Sodexo at Washougal School District will host a well-being fair for students Friday, April 20, at Hathaway Elementary School, 630 24th St., Washougal. Elementary classes will rotate through the fair, each spending one hour participating. The fair is an interactive wellness fair concept, which supports the school's mission of inspiring lifelong healthy habits for children. The purpose of the event is to promote good nutrition, get students to think about the path that food takes from the field to the table and to have fun along the way. Photo contest success at Jemtegaard Jemtegaard Middle School sixth-grader Carson Kanzler and his family took first place in the regional 2017 Red Ribbon Week photo contest. Kanzler received an iPad and a $1,000 check to go toward Jemtegaard during a school pep assembly April 12. Cam Strahm, assistant special agent in charge from the Drug Enforcement Administration for Oregon and Southern Washington, made the presentation. "There were hundreds of photos entered into this contest, and winning is a really big deal," Strahm said. "Carson did a wonderful job." Kanzler's photo featured him next to a poster he created supporting the message that staying drug free is the key to a successful future. Contributed information courtesy of Rene Carroll, Washougal School District County parks board seek youth members Clark County is on the search for two teenagers for the Parks Advisory Board to replace members who are leaving for college. The youth members will serve on the seven-member board in a non-voting capacity during the 2018-19 school year. The applicants should be between the ages of 14 and 19, and be interested in public service, parks and recreation and open space. The students should be prepared to serve on the parks board for at least one year and be available to attend monthly board meetings and arrange their own transportation. The advisory board meets from noon to 2:30 p.m. on the second Friday each month, usually in the Bud Van Cleve Community Room at Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver. Interested youth should submit a brief letter of interest and resume to Alyssa Weyhrauch at the County Manager's Office, P.O. Box 5000, Vancouver, Washington 98666-5000 or email alyssa.weyhrauch@clark.wa.gov. The application deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, May 18.
