The porch in front of Brian Skinner's home was created using wood from an old log cabin he had salvaged years earlier. Front porches are his "greatest love."
Brian Skinner bought this 7,500 square foot lot in 2002, in the hills above Washougal. He spent the next 12 years building it, using wood he had been salvaging since he was a young boy living in Beaverton.
The staircase and handrail in Skinner's home are carved from various salvaged Douglas fir wood pieces. The width of the staircase was designed based on the pocket door above it, which is from an old house in Portland.
This wood chair was salvaged from a Portland house. Skinner brought it, and several other items he had procured over the years, into his home.
Brian Skinner's favorite place in his hand-crafted house is a nook near the doorway. The fabric on the bench was purchased from Pendleton Woolen Mills in Washougal.
Skinner talks about the unique aspects of his hand-crafted house, which was built using pieces of Douglas fir, cedar, maple and walnut. The stones at the base of the fireplace he collected and polished, then pressed into the concrete by hand.
The phrase “E pluribus unum,” which translates to, “Out of many, one,” is on the seal of the United States.
It is also an apt description of one Washougal man’s unique house, which was constructed using salvaged pieces of Douglas fir, cedar, maple and walnut.
